Thanksgiving: Past and Present

When I was a little girl, we would wake up early on Thanksgiving morning and finish cleaning the house and cooking while we watched the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade. Family and friends would show up mid-day and we would all wait anxiously for the food to be ready. Grammy and Granddaddy-my mom’s parents- were always there and one of my favorites sounds was Grandaddy’s resounding “AMEN” when Dad would finish praying.

As we’ve gotten older, Grammy and Granddaddy are no longer with us and each of Mom’s siblings spend Thanksgiving with the in-laws, so we invite “stragglers” into our home for a good meal and fellowship. Folks who have nowhere to go and no family in driving distance are always more than welcome in the Garcia house. And believe me, we go out of our way to look for folks to invite. On Thursday of last week, Caroline, Sarah Ann, and I were going through facebook friend lists, cellphone address books, and church directories, but apparently everyone was able to be with their families. What’s up with that? So this year, it’s just us. Just Dad and Moms and all the kids. And I am grateful for that. I’m grateful for a day of just us.

I’m grateful for a Dad who is committed to being a provider and a Mother who is committed to loving us well. I am grateful for Caroline, Sarah Ann, Mary Lou, Jess, Joe, Katie, and Ben who are the best siblings a big sister could ask for. I am thankful for the laughter around the table and the joy that we share when we are together. I am grateful for good food and tradition and I am grateful for a family who cares enough to carry on the traditions that we began so long ago.

Thanksgiving is my favorite holiday and I am grateful to be spending it with my favorite people.

Here’s hoping your Thanksgiving is full of love, good food, funny people at your table (although I am telling you, none of them are as funny as Caroline), and lots of memories; new and old.

Happy Thanksgiving!

Psalm 100

All Men Exhorted to Praise God.
A Psalm for Thanksgiving.

1Shout joyfully to the LORD, all the earth.  2Serve the LORD with gladness; Come before Him with joyful singing.  3Know that the LORD Himself is God; It is He who has made us, and not we ourselves; We are His people and the sheep of His pasture.  4Enter His gates with thanksgiving And His courts with praise  Give thanks to Him, bless His name.  5For the LORD is good; His lovingkindness is everlasting And His faithfulness to all generations.
